Compare somebody marching in the streets for “universal health care” versus, say, Mother Teresa. One is out an afternoon, and maybe the cost of a sign, and considers himself the height of compassion and virtue. The other spent her whole life, and probably still considered herself unworthy.

You’d think someone who volunteers in a hospice would have a better grasp of the differences.

I would bet my bottom dollar that they feel it is a choice…and that they feel responsible on a parental level for that *choice*

when he promotes the availability of marriage, civil union or whatever they want for all homosexuals, I’ll change my opinion of the man.

I believe he has done just that, on national platforms and National TV. You just choose to ignore it. And for some reason you can’t come to grips he publicly supports his daughter and her lesbian partner and their gay marriage.

And he did not oppose his daughters gay marriage

You can’t even say it. You can’t say he supports gay marriage for all gays. You’ve blown a gasket, shorted a circuit. You just can’t compute a compassionate position by the most evil of conservatives. It’s not a good thing to you.

I will give you this though. I doubt Cheney would be supporting gay rights if his daughter wasn’t gay. He’s a product of an older culture. I bet he had his sleepless nights just like “Attila the Republican”. But you have to give him credit for coming around to the right conclusion. A reasonable person would.

AND, also, in addition, Dick Cheney’s “compassion”, tolerance, and acceptance does not extend past his family. He has no mercy for anyone who disagrees with him, is as vicious as he can get away with. The fact that he wishes his own daughter well signifies nothing.

When he advocates health insurance for every black child in the US, when he advocates for preventative health care for every citizen, when he promotes the availability of marriage, civil union or whatever they want for all homosexuals, I’ll change my opinion of the man.

And I’d love to do that. But no one should try to tell me how Dick Cheney has confronted life and come out a more human and humane person. That person just looks and sounds silly.

Tell us how much you admire Mother Teresa. Let’s go on and on about that, shall we?

Tell us how you hate to drive through slums, so you don’t. Now that’s compassion! Tell us how “Shock and Awe” is compassion, how Saddam was worse than Bush or the new guy. Write that up, and send it in to Leno or Letterman.

There may be a few bucks in it.

Tolerance of that which we inherently don’t understand begins with that first step.
