Watching Colorado's Fires June 26, 2012 4:58 pm podrock

Getting bad here along the Front Range of Colorado. Fires everywhere, 100+ degrees, dry thunderstorms and their outflow winds.

There’s one burning six miles south of Chez Podrock, lightning strike, hundreds of acres in two hours.

Thirty miles north, 90,000 acres burned in a fire that started three weeks ago. 200 + structures lost.

And down in Colorado Springs, The Southern Rampart Range is ablaze. Mom’s only 2 miles from the flames and is about to bug out.

I grew up with these mountains as my everyday skyline, I’ve hikes all over them, conducted geologic studies… I love these mountains like no other. My favorite place on earth is up there. It hasn’t burned yet, but right now it will be a miracle if it doesn’t.

The way this fire is going, it could burn the Air Force Academy.

I hope to be back later with links, etc; but right now I have the sheriff’s radio in the right speaker, the county fire department radio in the left speaker, the laptop on with the live feed from a Colorado Springs news station, all while flipping through the local TV stations….

…more later…
