I guess, in a way...my rings do mean something to me on a deeper level. I wear my Dad's wedding band on my right thumb. I love having this because when I look down I am always reminded of him. On my right pinkie is my daughter's baby ring. When my best girls got married last year, they gave each other small gold Celtic wedding bands. I went to the same place..an old friend's shop...and purchased a silver Celtic band and it signifies the bond the three of us possess with each other.
I designed my own wedding band years ago which is three rings in one.
I wear my mother's wedding band, but not much longer because it has worn so thin. I have my birthstone ring, and my mother's graduation ring from high school that she received for Christmas back in the early forties. My rings all have a story behind them. I guess they replace the need for tattoos... heh...but I can take them off...;)

The next ring will be Mom's engagement ring...but not until "after".

I am extremely sentimental.
The furnishings in my abode decry that same sentimentality. One of my favorite pieces is an aluminum candy tray my grandmother *made* back before WWII.

I am hoping my granddaughter will be like me. My daughter and son are not. Otherwise, I have no idea who I will leave them to.

I see tattoos on people all the time in the hospice. One younger fellow, a kick boxer, had flames starting in his groin and spreading over his abdomen up to his nipples. And 15 or 20 others. The message one received may not have been the one he wanted sent. The other day there was a fellow with a bunch, more than 3, "Death before Dishonor" type tats on his arms and shoulders, and more crude affairs on his back and chest. No one who lives by that motto has to tell anyone, it's obvious. I think the tats are there to persuade others, and by that maybe make it true for the owner.

The latter were clearly from prison. They seemed to be bluffs, a show like the tail of a peacock or the "show" of a gorilla. He was not mentally competent, argumentative, restless, and one hoped that at sometime in his life he felt effective, meaningful.

I have a theory which is 100% accurate according to my own anecdotal experience. The more tattoos, rings, jewelry, piercings a person has, the less comfortable with themselves they are. It seems that there's a hope the next addition will be the one which completes them and finally adds to the outside that which is missing from the inside. It's intended to make a statement, and does.

In my experience they are high-maintenance people, requiring a lot of attention, care and understanding. They can appear to be generous, charming, thoughtful and loving. With time it will be noticed there is a price on everything.

I'm not saying that people without body art and jewelry are happy with themselves, just that those with a noticeable excess aren't.

The absence of bodily ornaments says something, as does the presence.

ai tend to be between 10-20 lbs too heavy. I seldom hgit my desired weight but I fluctuate 10-15 lbs in any given year.

This bothers me not one bit except when I go to my Doc. If I feel like my weight is up, I put my wallet and keys in my jacket pocket and lay it on a chair before I weigh.

I mean, how heavy could my wallet and keys be? Surely no more than a pound but for some strange reason usually when I do this my weight will be 3-5 lbs less than my last visit.

I do some silly things.

I don't have a problem with then one way or another. Some of them are cute on the young girls but they should plan for the entropy. The little butterfly tats on the back of the shoulder will probably be okay, but they are all going to fade with age.

I have never seriously considered a tattoo but one of my rallying cries with my buddys used to be let's get drunk and get tattoos.

I have my nose pierced. I have no philosophical reason, except that I am a jewelry slut.

I have three sets of holes in my ears...same reason. (insert pun here)

Rings? Oh dear...suffice it to say I take them off before I weigh myself.

All those pretty little girls with flowers and butterflies on their cute little asses are going to look ridiculous once the canvas starts to sag.

When tats first started getting popular with non sailors and and non bikers a few years ago, I thought they were pretty exciting and daring, now they are just pretty boring--even tacky. Nowadays, its really sexy when you see a pretty girl at the beach with no skin illustrations--and no piercings.

I considered getting one when I was in the Navy, but it finally occurred to me that some day I might have to become a fugitive from the law, or choose to live a life of crime, and having a plainly visible and unerasable identifying mark on my body might not be a good idea. I did decide if I ever rounded the Horn, I would allow myself one traditional body decoration: an earring; on my left ear if on the west to east downwind run, the right ear if I sailed uphill.
