Most of this comes from other countries.

When my system filters things into the junk file, it strips attachments and reveals real URL addresses concealed behind things like "UPS.com."

Some of this stuff would fool almost anyone. Watch for typos, and if your system shows a real URL when you hover the mouse over a link, check them out.

its embarassing. And the more clever and insistent and desperate they are, and the more technology they use, the more resistant and put-off all the potential customers must be. But the costs are low on the web...

There is advertising out there so insulting and obnoxious that I can't see buying their product even if I liked its quality and price. I wonder if anyone out there has done any serious studies on just how effective it all is; how near is it to the saturation point? I would bet if some marketing firm actually did, they would be tempted to doctor the results.

I used to think the worst ones were the people who sold stuff to kids, like toys and breakfast cereal. How could grown men and women debase themselves that way? Have they no shame? Now all advertising is starting to get like that. These guys give me the creeps. How can they live with themselves?

I've been getting a lot of mail lately targeted to old farts, insurance, medical, mortgage refinancing, even prepaid mortuary services. Very often, the stationary is designed to look like official IRS, Social Security and Medicare documents. I guess they are trying to trick confused and elderly people into buying their products. Someone sits around a table and plans this, organizes it, spends money and gives orders to make it happen.
All so they can sell to people who nearing senility, to take money from folks who might be their parents or grandparents.

We are members of a pretty foul and filthy species.

I finally found an email address I could send a letter to. There was no phone number.

A robot responded saying my message had been received. So I guess I'll be hearing from them again in a few days.

I use a mail screener and blacklist unwanted mail.

LinkedIn is fairly agressive, but probably legit enough to take you off the list if you complain.

Email is out of control and you address is almost as sensitive as your SSI. I get 30-40 emails per day before screening and I try to be careful.

I have started using a secondary address for any registration that I feel inclined to submit.
