But he made no effort to publish any of it.

I read "Islands in the Stream" a few years ago, edited together by his estate from his notes and drafts. There were flashes of the old brilliance there, but it was an overall disappointment.

Considering how he died, I wonder if he realized what was happening to him.

As long as you've got a working brain, you can write. Stephen Hawking writes books. Terry Pratchett is routing around his Alzheimers using dictation software. A major reason I'm working on getting into that business.

Keep the mind cooking and a lot of other stuff follows along. The good news is even if you never sell a book, the mental activity of writing and organizing it is still good for your brain and your outlook.

I try to keep myself immersed in escapist activities to avoid these truths.

pisses me off that I am too old for some activities, just when they would come in handy.

But for different reasons. Fortunately, most of my friends are still alive.

Ive just been spending a lot of time thinking lately, but not about my accomplishments, but about what I never got around to. The wasted time, the mistakes, the roads not taken, the trails that led nowhere.
Eventually we have to come to terms with all the missed opportunities, and the all big fish that got away. And at night, you dream about the lions.

You spend the first half of your life learning what you can do, and the rest of it realizing what you can't.

The other day I saw "The Old Man and the Sea" on TV, for about the fifth time. I finally realized where the Old Man was at, and where Hemingway must have been at when he wrote it. He lived for a decade after he wrote it, but it was the last book he published in his lifetime.
