Maybe not.

I can still get compatible spares for quite old appliances. Might be true here, too.

Yep, you will have to bite the bullet.

The outside unit won't mesh with a new inside unit and vice versa. Repairing your evaporator coils will cost as much as a new unit.

The good news is, new stuff is more energy efficient and when you have spent the 2-3K you will save it back eventually.

I assume we're talking central air, here.

The evaporator coil is that v-shaped thing in your furnace. It probably sees a lot of thermal stressing. The part runs anywhere from $200 to $500, plus installation.

If your system is old, it will still use R22. It's legal to recharge with it up until about 2020.

Well...it appears no one was stealing my freon. I was getting the run around by two companies instead. FIVE leaks in the evaporative coil.

As Bowser's post has confirmed, it is no joke to be with out air conditioning in Texas. 116 heat index yesterday.

We are now up to two thousand dollah.

Freon's price has sky rocketed...$45.00 a lb....up about 100%. They are trying to discourage freon usage as I understand it...trying to get us to use something else...but I forget the name...saw it on the news a few weeks back when it was $32.00 a pound. Stealing freon is on the rise. No leaks...had a man out today that spent an hour trying to find a leak...after we had to wait for the unit to thaw...because the three pounds added Saturday was gone. Four pounds added today...we are up to $600.00 so far in expenses. We put a piece of sheet metal over the port and screwed it in several places. The a/c guy is going to try to find a tamper resistant valve for us.

The last time I added freon it was not very expensive but I have no idea how much they added.

Is Freon theft a problem in FtW? I have never heard of it here.

My car AC has been acting up and I learned that there is old and new Freon with one or the other costing a lot more. I forget which was which but my car uses cheap Freon. Fixing it is going to cost me a bunch unfortunately.

I would bet that it is getting out some way vs being stolen. If it is a grudge thing it would be someone who knows you have had ac problems recently.

Yep...just finished that...I alerted the neighborhood association and the police. Freon was probably stolen...it is up to 45.00 a lb. now.

I'm not sure how you would "huff" the refrigerant out of an air conditioner. You could let it out and let it dissipate, I suppose. Is there some way you can seal up the works so the ports aren't accessible?

It is either someone with a grudge...someone is huffing...or the company I used for 25 years has lied to me about putting freon in it before.
