People who work around streams or in kitchens don't seem to have a constant urge to pee. I think the sound of running water does two things.
First, it reminds someone of peeing, and if they have to already it makes that urge conscious.
Second, running water masks the sound of pee hitting the pot and consequently makes it safe to pee without disclosing exactly what is happening. Social pressures somehow work to make people ashamed of natural processes sometimes, like sex.

and there is a lot to read on it, suggests that it is a simple conditioned response, A LA Pavlov's dogs. The sound of a bell ringing caused the dogs to salivate because they associated the bell sound with eating

The water running sounds like urinating, that sound becomes associated so, it makes you want to pee.

Certainly, our means of elimination has running water close by. (If this is what Rob meant by perpetuation, then I apologize). It would be interesting to know if tribespeople from primitive areas have the same tendency.

An interesting story: a college psychology class once trained their psych instructor to stand in the corner while giving a lecture. They used female students' more or less provocative poses as rewards. The instructor was completely unaware why he gradually began to teach from the side of the room.

I can't say. I remember us kids in school pulling a prank on the teacher though. We would all take turns pulling and *itching* our earlobe. One right after another. Ah, impish solidarity! Prankish camaraderie!!! We watched to see how long it took our teacher to follow suit.

She always did!

I know parents will turn on a faucet at a trickle when potty training their children. It's possible that it's a natural response reinforced with education.

Just a guess.
