He is the one who is debating us, so it is his arguement I will refute. I realize that I treat him with a good deal more respect than he treats me, in this regard. Since he would like nothing better than for me to defend Stalin's actions, and he hears me doing it regardless of what I actually say. Them's the breaks.

It is plain as day that you are correct. That it doesn't matter that throwing 10's of or 100's of thousands of people off the voter rolls is absolutely *vile*. And that the Republicans think it is a fine idea because they gain an electoral advantage that way. Really truly vile.

But you won't be gloating at me anyway. If the Republicans win big in Novemeber, I'm going to become invisible.

With these voter disenfranchisement initiatives, and the new campaign financing laws, (not to mention that the economy will continue to deteriorate no matter who wins) this may be America's last free election. Being politically vocal, even if only on an obscure blog like this, is not going to be very wise.

There's only one prediction I will make about the coming elections: America will get the government it deserves.

Not even the Republicans believe that. Its about keeping blacks, the poor, latinos, and old people from voting, people who are more likely to vote Democratic. This is cynical and criminal behavior, and it is deliberate and planned. Is there any question that this is why they are going after attorney general Eric Holder? He's got the constitutional tools to stop them.

I am really pissed off at these creeps. Not so much that they would try to pull off this blatant Nazi stunt, I've come to expect that from our new conservatives; but that they think we are so stupid and so weak that we won't notice.

I'm sure Democrats are already assembling an entire liturgy of fantasies to explain their coming losses.

Certainly they never seem to blame their actual ideas or policies.

It's going to be amazing how many people will suddenly and magically have become racists between 2008 and 2012.

A lot more information on state-by-state voter ID law situation here.

Polls show 70 to 75 percent support of voter ID laws, even including majority support among Democrats polled.

Cocoons are comfortable, but it's awfully dark in there.

...you would risk imprisonment for the privilege of one extra vote. There aren't too many people who are that stupid (James O'Keefe, notwithstanding).

It's going to be a very close election and we have a black man running for president. Why else has this suddenly become an issue now, in states controlled by Republicans? Duh!!!

As for your ID hand waving, why would I let someone use my registration? Once he voted, my number would be crossed off the rolls and I would be unable to vote. I don't see how you could cast multiple votes, which is the whole point of voter fraud, isn't it? Sure, you could steal a card, or buy it from someone, but only one vote could be cast per card. And you could never do this in the numbers necessary to influence an election.

As for the alleged incompetence, lethargy and helplessness of some voters, that's precisely why they should vote. The Republicans want to keep people who are not likely to vote Republican from voting. I guess you want a government of nice, middle class, white people, eh?

Its not just stupid people or lowlifes who have a reason to vote Democratic, as you imply. There are lots of perfectly respectable pensioners, my neighbors, who have perfectly good reasons to keep your lot out of office. It really doesn't take a mental giant to figure this out.

This is the most blatantly undemocratic thing your party has done, even more so than the catalog of other crimes you have perpetrated to obstruct and paralyze government and frustrate every policy that threatens your privilege and power, and your precious tax cuts.

You wanted a definition of fascism? I'm looking at it.

The point of the ID is to prove you're the guy on the list who registered.

The process of registration is irrelevant.

If you're housebound, and have no friends or relatives, then register and vote by mail. Hell, that's probably where most of the fraud is anyway now.

Student IDs are also acceptable under most of these laws, as are other forms of legitimate ID.

There's something weird about this flap. It's like this one specific mechanism for preventing fraud, easily routed around if you think about it, hits a real sore point with Democratic leaders. Is there something else going on we don't know about?

Lots of people don’t work, have lost their licenses, never had one, live with others who have licenses so they don’t need one, many are illiterate, work long hours, or are simply not in touch with the news or know whats going on. Does that mean they are not entitled to vote? Or that you would simply prefer they didn’t because they are likely to be Democrats?

Heh. Yeah, I would suspect such people as you describe would be very likely to be Democrats. Or at least be happy to vote the idiot cards they're handed.

You already proved who you were when you registered to vote.

Many of the people in my neighborhood don't drive, they are too old. Even those who do may not want to spend all day at the DMV getting another ID for their spouse or neighbor. A lot of people have no idea this is going on, they are going to show up at the polls and they will not be allowed to vote, and it will be too late to do anything about it. That is the plan isn't it?

And of course, students have picture IDs, but most of them are Commies anyway, make them get another one. We don't want them voting on local candidates or issues either, do we?

Besides, don't Republicans think we have too much government? Why do they all of a sudden feel it is necessary to set up this bureaucracy to solve a problem that they themselves concede doesn't really exist, and that it has to be done before the next election? You must really think we are dim, Tom. And I am offended.

George Bush, water boarding, WMDs, Iraq, tax cuts for the wealthy, global warming denial...
Sorry Tom, you've just used up all your credibility. I don't believe you any more.

Anyhow, I did address yours with my analogy, above. I realize that you don't really understand analogys and will likely point out some variation of "schools aren't elections".
