...as with everything else in the world, home computers are accumulating moving parts like an SOB. The same thing is happening to them as is happening to what's under the hood of your car. More on the software side than hardware, I mean. There are a lot more pieces to maintain the current release of (and the releases come out at an increasing pace). And there are a lot more pieces where something might go wrong on the right release. And each piece just gets bigger and bigger. More lines of code.

You can usually solve the resources problem by telling Roxio not to run in the task bar. This option should be in settings, or tools.

If there is still a problem you can use msconfig, via start/run to stop it from running on start-up. This will not affect the program. You just start it when you wish to use it.

Too many programs want to run in the background for auto updates and auto start when the program suspects you want to burn a disk.

When I was programming mainframes and minis, we wrote the applications software, it was the utilities, drivers, etc that were managed by pencil-necked geeks that toiled down in the basement. So if writing to a printer (or in my case) sending pen commands to a flatbed plotter via a 9" tape, suddenly stopped working, you picked up the phone and got to yell at someone to fix it.

Nowadays, you have to buy your applications, install them yourself, you have no way of knowing if they are doing what they are supposed to do, and debug the utilities, peripherals and interfaces yourself when they don't talk to each other.

I miss the pencil-necked geeks. We used to call them "systems programmers" and we were "applications programmers."

I will say this: This stuff is a lot easier than when I started out with computers.

Nowadays, with Microsoft, almost everything I install has a driver already built into the operating system. True "plug and play."

Very good point.

It doesn't happen often, but I have run across issues with updates and I have had to reinstall older ones. Most of my driver software is in exe files on my hard drive, and I do save the old ones.

I misspoke in my post above. M Recluse had actually downloaded the latest software and drivers, including Roxio. She will use her original disk version next time and see if the new, improved version is the cause of the problem.

Moral: keep everything up to date, but don't throw anything away.

Again, always go online to get the latest software and drivers.

I have rarely gotten software on a product disk that was actually the latest update.
