I can't teach you anything there. :)

Not to be morbid, but in the worst case, if you had to abandon your home, I'd prepare a bug-out bag. (I know you've already done this, but just in case)

I'd use a small, lightweight, day hiking backpack.

Inside would be:

A modern, backpacking water filter.

Rain poncho. (the large military type)

Swiss army knife or multi-tool

Headlamp ("AAA" battery style)

Wide brimmed hat

Sunglasses

Water shoes (the little slipper type aqua shoes? makes a good lightweight backup, while your regular boots/shoes dry out)

A handful of ziplock sandwich bags, for misc. items; jump drives, matches/lighter, extra batteries, the remainder of the .45 ACP cartridges, etc.

Your emergency radio

Also, this wouldn't be a bad time to consider "Cloud Storage" of some of your data. (and don't overlook your bookmark file)

I don't know if you have a radio scanner or not. Even if you do, here's a link to a site with live feeds you can listen to on your computer : http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?ctid=344

Also, if you click on the county home page, you'll find a list of frequencies used by the local first responders.

Probably the absolute worst we can expect is the house will be damaged and condemned by the authorities and we'll have to move to my cousin's in Miami or my brother's in Ft Myers while repairs are made. Then again, I may be playing host to them!

But those are all good ideas.

confirm evacuation routes set up meeting points in case of separation. Know where red-cross shelters will be set up. Consider reserving a hotel room in an inland city. Most will allow you to cancel the reservation 24 hours in advance. establish a phone tree to let others know how and where you are. The Red Cross also has a website for this purpose. Take pictures of the inside and outside of the house for insurance purposes. If you have a chainsaw, see that it is working, sharp, and you've plenty of oil/gas. Put the strong box inside a big, clear plastic bag to keep out moisture. Check with neighbors, especially elderly ones.

Hang in there ER, we'll be thinking of you and the wife.
