She had one leg and one arm amputed above the knee/elbow and one leg and arm below the knee/elbow. There are different prosthetics obviously. Her arm that is below the elbow has prosthetic hand that did not appear to articulate. She also had a gripping claw that she liked to use much more. Easier to grasp and type with. The arm and leg that was amputated above the joint are much less functional. She can take about 10 steps with her artificial legs but it's dangerous and she gets around 99.999% of the time in her powered wheelchair.

I understand Buck. I have a 34 year old friend that lost both her breasts this week.

She has a seven year old daughter who plays with my granddaughter. I have developed quite a fondness for Jenny. Her courage, her calm, is inspiring in and of itself.

The older you get..( October 13th :) the more these occurrences will affect you.

She is a math teacher for our high school. Turns out she has a very rare kind of cancer that effects 3% of the women who get breast cancer. It had spread to her lymph nodes. They recommend a complete hysterectomy within 2 years because this rare form of cancer has a 40% chance of spreading to her reproductive organs within 5 years.

I find a certain kind of peace embracing this with her.

She has a bachelor degree from here in Portland and two Masters degrees from a college in Boston. She will be going home to Hawaii finally after three years of treatment very soon. About 300 of her friends will be throwing her a welcome home party. I wish her good luck.
