Heh.

And I'm the one "unravelling."

In October of 1980, Gallup had Carter eight points ahead of Reagan.

You are perceptive to see the relationship to birtherism.

The sudden interest by conservatives in discrediting polls, both in their media and right here on the Zone, is the beginning of a process to alienate and denigrate the entire electoral process. No matter if the polls are their own, commissioned by their own press and political parties.

As the demographics drift away from their Fifties' Mayberry RFD ideal, they are no longer delivering the right results. Obama was attacked as being an outsider, un-American, a foreigner, anti-business, a Muslim, a Socialist, anything to make him alien and foreign, the Other. The idea was to de-legitimize him, to make him obviously unnacceptable to Real Americans. It would be too easy to just dismiss it as racism, it is more complex than that. But it is hauntingly familiar. The correct term is nativism, not the man's race, but where he was born. And if he was born here, then to question it, to deny it.

Now the very idea of voting is being de-legitimized, the electoral process itself, even the purely tactical procedure of polling, is now cast in doubt, because the results are becoming increasingly unacceptable. If the voters don't vote the way they should, disenfranchise them, institute voter suppression, do whatever it takes to make it come out Right.

It won't be long before the general election itself will be illegitimate if it doesn't yield the desired result. In fact, you can see where they are heading with this. The re-election of Obama will be a seditious act, a perversion of democracy, a form of coup d'etat. They're setting up the argument in case they need to use it. Remember, they've already stolen one election.

"...extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice... moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue."

I saw an Obama favorability numbers showing an increase over the last Rasmussen on the subject (confirming the same trend shown by everybody else). I'd have to assume that the trends Ras shows will follow the trends shown by other pollsters. They almost always do, even when Ras' actual numbers always show lower Dem and higher R.

(I'm not a Rasmussen subscriber, so if that's what it takes to confirm your point, don't bother)

It's actually a lot more complicated.

"The Five False Assumptions Behind Poll-Skewing"

So maybe poll-skewing, assuming it's being done, doesn't even work, or could even backfire.

You check Rasmussen today?

I felt that I could study how they were trying to influence people to adopt their point of view.

Finally, I realized the conservative press isn't trying to convince or persuade their opponents or the undecided. It's sole purpose is to reassure and pacify those who have already bought into their program.

Viewed in that way, some of the conservative agitprop we see right here on this forum suddenly starts to make sense.
