I can get sushi next door for five bucks.

It's quite possible to eat healthy for not much money.

People eat what they really want to eat. This drives some other people nuts.

Most ethnic food is the result of years of rank poverty and deprivation. Look up "soul food."

Sushi is what people ate when they didn't have a lot of firewood, no actual meat, and they had to make something savory out of a very small amount of food.

Kids are fat because they don't play outside any more.

It's the portions.

You go to any restaurant, low end or high end, and they deliver you a plate apparently intended for a lumberjack.

I have a theory: you can charge twice as much for twice as much food, but it doesn't cost the restaurant twice as much in labor/materials to double a portion on an order. I have no data to back this up, but it would explain the growth of what you get when you order.

That being said, there's usually a senior portion on a menu with smaller portions, and there are always low calorie choices no matter where you eat at any major chain. A grilled chicken salad at McDonalds, for example. My wife and I are also starting to split entrees and desserts, or just order an appetizer.

It's plain that Americans don't pay enough for food; we place too much emphasis on price over quality.

It's a sad irony: For $5 you can eat crap like a civilized 21st century American.

Or for $27 you can eat healthy like a "primitive" pre-19th century Native American.

We've come a long way. I think we should turn around and go back, at least when it comes to food.
