This guy had an accent but was fairly understandable. He was throwing around the Microsoft name but when I asked the name of his company he clearly said Global Technical Support. I asked for a number but it was a fake.

Bowser's situation is typical of hundreds of so called free scans. followed by attempt to sell you software. This is crooked but usually harmless if you decline. These guys are said to install immobilizing software while they have control, then demand hundreds of dollars to fix your box.

I found D-Link tech support on the web, and they ran me through an entire series of "tests". I even let them take over my computer. They found thousands of errors, then tried to sell me a program for cleaning them.

The only clue it wasn't D-Link was that they answered immediately. Otherwise the site looked authentic, the process seemed reasonable up to that point.

Smooth.
