I'd like a description of this population of "millions of Americans uncomfortable with a black president" who voted for Obama last time but will vote Republican now.

And no, Obama isn't a "moderate Republican" pursuing "centrist policies." He wasn't when he was elected, and he isn't now. He just isn't lying about it like he was in 2008.

rambling back atcha

Shuffling the deck on you:

Obama pretty much has blown his load when it comes to turning the recession around. Who knows, maybe it will be enough but whatever he does next will be more of the same.

But that status quo is not so bad:
I think the economy has been gaining momentum for awhile now. Housing prices are going up and construction jobs are coming back. The unemployment rate is hovering but the number of jobs added is going up, albeit slowly. Consumer confidence is rising.

I don't think that's taking you out of context, so much as it is connecting the dots. What we have in Obama is a moderate Republican pursuing Clintonian "the era of big government is over" centrist policies.

If Romney was lying during the primary, then he's actually a moderate Republican too. Obama in whiteface, which may drum up a crucial few percentage points on Tuesday. (A "few percentage points" isn't a blanket indictment, it's just a factual observation that a few million Americans find themselves uncomfortable with a black President, and in a close election, their prejudices and fears might tip the balance.)

Doesn't sound like you think Romney was lying during the general election. I know the conventional wisdom about pivoting after the convention, but are you really sure that Romney can just shake the etch-a-sketch and make the tea partiers and all the social conservatives go away, after a primary as bitter as this one was? The very fact that Romney pandered so cravenly to the most extreme elements of the right doesn't bode well for the hope that he'll stand up to them after the election. Standing up doesn't seem to be one of Romney's skills as a "business leader".

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't be feeling good about hoping I'd guessed correctly about when my candidate lied.

Me, I'm going to write in "Barramitter Obamney". Cause the other guy still sucks.

You are correct the economy is gaining strength in all sectors and whoever wins will benefit from the coming expansion. Obamacare will actually save the government money and reduce the deficit over the long run. But you're right healthcare won't become affordable by the ACA alone. Imo only single payer can do that. But Obama did what he could given he didn't have the votes in the Senate for a public option, which as Tom likes to say would certainly lead to single payer eventually.

If Obama is reelected, the first order of business is the fiscal cliff. Obama will have huge leverage because he can kill the bush tax cuts by doing nothing and then passing equivalent cuts for the middle class only in the following Congress. No one wants the sequester either, so Obama has said he will seek a grand bargain to fix the deficit and debt responsibly over the next decade, while providing investments in education, r&d and infrastructure in the short run. The president has said he will seek a 2.5 to 1 ratio in spending cuts vs revenue increases. He has also pushed hard for tax reform since closing corporate loopholes and ending corporate welfare will vastly increase government revenues.

I respect you Rob. You may be misinformed (for example: when you say the president doesn't care about the deficit), but at least your arguments are not based on all the terrible lies about Obama so many republicans believe.

Don't necessarily agree with all, don't disagree strongly. I do think that if Romney is elected we will see aggressive exportation of jobs to anywhere else, and monies from tax cuts used for aggressive financial manipulations - hedge funds and derivatives to avoid the regulation of the stock market. That's his history, heritage and the desire of those who control the Republican party.

Romney is the epitomy of what almost destroyed the American economy. By cutting taxes on the wealthy and increasing military spending there are two places available to save money - the poor and what's left of the middle class, or cut military spending. We know where it would come from.

However, realistically, if one wants to save money, cut government spending and the size of government, the way to do it would be to cut military spending in half. Then we'd only spend 5 times what the ROW spends on their military. That is if one was serious, and not simply blowing the same old smoke.
