A perfect test case:

Democrats have total power in California now. Taxes are going up. Want to bet on deficits?

A big problem here...

Is that I have to deal with paradigms that are so screwed up that it takes a lot of spadework to get past them.

For most of our history, well into my own lifetime, there was almost no such thing as "Federal infrastructure." The interstate highway system was new and unique. Almost everything liberals talk about as "infrastructure" was financed and built by states, localities, and in many cases, the private sector. And surprisingly, this is still largely the case.

Less than a quarter of infrastructure capital now comes from the Federal government, and less than 7 percent of maintenance of existing infrastructure.

Now, unless Washington builds it, we are told it won't get built. Why?

Note that you have defined a "reasonable conservative" as one who accepts the Left's idea that the Federal government should run everything. Note also the treatment Romney got when he broached the idea that maybe our disaster response should be decentralized a bit more.

The two parties can find common ground on many issues and cut deals that are good for the country.

Infrastructure is an obvious one. We can finance a bill now that we need to do anyway, for near zero interest, or we can wait until later and pay much more for it. If Romney won there is no question an infrastructure bill would be an early priority. Will the gop come to their fucking senses and work with the president now?

Let's start with a budget deal. Reagan raised taxes. Are these hyper-partisan tea party fucks going to finally go along with a reasonable compromise and agree to some tax increases to lower the deficit, or do democrats have to force the issue by letting the Bush tax cuts expire?
