The average apathetic voter would be more likely to sit out an election and go fishing instead if the polls indicated his candidates were cruising towards an easy win. Likewise, I know I would be much more likely to drop everything I was doing and spend all day in line if I heard my guys were behind.

In this election, I could not believe the polls myself. I believed the popular vote was going to be very close, as the polls indicated, but I never guessed the electoral college would lean Obama the way it did, although the polls predicted that too.

Incidentally, I hope Conservatives will finally come to their senses now and realize that this 18th century anti-democratic Electoral College is an anachronism that needs to be abolished in favor of a pure popular vote. It may have worked for them with Bush/Gore, but it would have torpedoed them in 2012 if they had edged out the Dems at the polls.

I vote early now, by mail, like my GOP neighbors, so it doesn't apply to me, but it was pretty clear that our Governor Scott here in Florida was doing everything he could to game the voting system to favor his party. The usual Florida election day long-line screw-up can only confirm that suspicion. It was so clear to everyone that we got a voter turnout like never before, and the state, which is usually Republican-leaning, voted Democratic for Obama and other national Democratic candidates.

I haven't seen such a concerted, widespread, and cynical attempt at voter suppression since the civil rights era, and even back then, once the South realized the Fed was serious about black folks voting, it fell into line. Oh sure, crooked elections happen all the time, with both parties, but they are usually local affairs. I've never seen it become a matter of blatant party policy, nationwide, like it was in this election. (Remember that Pennsylvania official bragging how he had accomplished the voter suppression agenda in his state to clear the way for Romney? "Done!") I won't forget that, neither will a lot of other people. And its why I've stopped being polite and started using the word "fascist" where I feel it is warranted.

Scott's voter supression maneuver backfired, as it did in several other states where GOP governors instituted similar "voter fraud prevention" scams. I realize many Conservatives will react with shock and indignation at what I'm saying, but it's pretty clear to everyone who wasn't Tea Party that the Republicans were trying to pull a fast one and counting on Democrats being too stupid to catch on or too lazy to do anything about it.

They guessed wrong, and it may have cost them the election. Like Jody says, "Karma is a bitch."

"I don’t recall attacking pollsters on that basis but a fallback position that seems logical would be to say simply that the strategy worked and their skewing affected the outcome of the election. People tend to gravitate to the apparent winning candidate."

It is also QED that any fallback position will be ridiculed by the other side.

I have no idea whether or not any of the polls were deliberately skewed. There are lots of polls that predicted various outcomes and no specific poll was specified by alcaray so no magic is apparent

But then, you surprised me Frank when you posted that you cling to the fantasy that polls which predicted exactly how the election turned out, actully persuaded voters to turn out in those exact same numbers!

Whoa! Magic!
