It's a protest gimmick, or a joke. Any idiot can create one of these petitions on this website and put in online. There's one on the site to make Duncan Trussell Emperor of Earth that already has over 300 signatures. So there are now "secession petitions" for 38 different states. So what? But hey, if the Left counts on the butt-ignorance of its loyal followers, and pretends this is actually serious, they can blow this up into something it never was and then happily tilt at the resulting strawman. I note that this was a useful political technique over this past election season.
