Okay, maybe not so earthshaking.

When a NASA official said last week data from an instrument on the Mars Curiosity rover suggested something "for the history books," many people thought an announcement was imminent of the possible discovery of life on the Red Planet -- until the space agency began to seriously backpedal on the story.

The phrase has come to mean “something of great significance”. But exactly what does that mean? A planetary geologist might find mineralogical confirmation that a rock must have formed under water of great significance. A biologist might find a lump of coal historically significant. For a lay person, a picture of a sea shell or a fossilized leaf might be what it takes to raise eyebrows.

I want to see a piece of worked flint, preferably, a projectile point.

I don’t understand that. I’d understand “science books”, “chemistry books”, “space exploration books” but not history.

Unless they mean it’s relevant to Mars history. But everything they find is relevant to Mars history.

I hope something leaks.

Rushed straight here, and checked out UMSF in a second window!

Can’t wait for the AGU meeting first week of December.
