What is really scary is not the nutjobs that believe this nonsense, but the ones who don't but still aid in its propagation because they think they can derive political benefit from it if enough people believe it.

Trying to prove Obama was an illegitimate president, that he was not even a bonafide citizen, is still a thriving cottage industry. Socialist, Muslim, Kenyan, college dropout, the stories are not only absurd, some of them are even contradictory. My favorite is the one of how they planted false records of his birth in Hawaii while he was being born in Kenya so that when he was ready to take over the Presidency he would have his alibi ready. It boggles the mind.

But again, what is frightening is not those who accept this, or even those who deliberately generate it, but those who know better but choose to look the other way, who refuse to denounce it or even question it because they hope enough people will believe it to sway a close election. Its right up there with politicians who are not creationists refusing to say so for fear of alienating their fundamentalist allies. It reveals duplicity and treachery of a high order.

In a related story:

They are releasing a remake of the 1984 paranoid flagfest "Red Dawn".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Dawn_(2012_film)

You would have thought they would have updated the threat, made them Eye-ranians or Ay-rabs, but no, they are still at war with the Commies. But we can get a bit of an insight into what these patriots are really after, and where they're coming from, by reading between the lines...

<blockquote>"While in post-production, the invading army was changed from Chinese to North Korean in order to maintain access to China's box office."</blockquote>

Ya just gotta love that ideological purity.

I recently cornered an enthusiastic distributor of <i>every</i> whackjob conspiracy theory listed on the Mother Jones master chart, and he finally admitted that he knew--at least on some level, some of the time--that none of the smears is true. But he went on to explain that mere facts don't matter because he feels compelled to "warn the country about Obama".

You wouldn't expect an extremist to see the logical Grand Canyon yawning there--what exactly is he warning us about if all of his charges are known to be false? That one's not hard to figure out, if we're honest with ourselves about the source of the insane rage against our black President.

Rather than try to analyze whether a given smear is true or not, I've come to view them as analogous to words or phrases in a vocabulary of hate. Each false smear ultimately reduces down to a single primal thought: "I hate you! I hate you! I hate you!".

What matter isn't <i>what</i> they believe, it's that they're so <i>hungry to believe it</i>. That's the real message conveyed by the right's comprehensive program of sedition. While I don't doubt that there are political operatives and fundraisers happy to exploit the situation, at its heart it's the opposite of calculated.

You know how Sharia law is threatening to take over all our cherished institutions--particularly since those nasty Liberals are ultimately behind it.

As Bob Dylan put it "The riot squad is restless, they need someplace to go."

http://video.foxnews.com/v/1982055625001/sen-rubios-remarks-ignite-debate-over-creationism/

Rubio is a moderate Republican, and he belongs to a church (Catholic)that has no problem with Darwinism. He doesn't believe that crap. Most Republicans don't believe that crap. I know for a fact most Cuban exiles don't believe that crap.

His craven evasion on this issue is for one reason only, to avoid offending the more extremist fundamentalist wing of the Republican Party, a demographic on which that party has been relying more and more on for support. This Republican fear of Creationists is like the Republican fear of pro-lifers and the Republican fear of pro-gun
voters. When was the last time you heard a Republican actually condemn the icons of the fundowacko right? When was the last time you heard one condemn Trump or Limbaugh or Fox? You saw the Republican Primary process, it spit out Huntsman and brought Romney right into line.

Republicans are just like anybody else, they represent a broad spectrum of views, but they have come to rely on the loony fringe so much that its hard to take them seriously on any issue any more.

Do Democrats pander to extremist elements in their base? Of course they do, no one wants to offend potential supporters. But Democrats don't pander as much, and not as often, and not as cravenly, as Republicans. They simply don't need to; they appeal to more moderates.
