With Warren he had an election coming up to consider and didn't want to totally freak out Wall St. Turns out they went all in to beat him anyway, and lost.

With Rice there is no reason if he really wanted her to not push her through. I think Obama wanted Kerry all along.

Obama is a pragmatist, and he can be ruthless, even with his friends. I'll never forgive him for caving in with Warren, although as it turned out she'll be able to do a lot more damage where she is now than she would have managing that agency. Karma strikes again.

But I recall seeing on TV a map of Eurasia with red dots for every embassy attacked. I didn't count them, but there were a lot of them. There were even some in Europe, carried out by Muslims living in Europe. There were demonstrations at US embassies as far away as India and Indonesia. Not all these incidents involved fighting, some may have been peaceful, or quickly contained by local authorities, but we didn't know that until days later when things finally got sorted out. The first few days it must have been mass confusion in the "war room".

Of course, not all were deadly. They were just demonstrations, marches, street riots, clashes with local police, slogan sprayings on walls, flag burnings, that sort of thing. People were killed in fighting with police, but no embassy personell were hurt anywhere, except in Libya.

Everyone was pissed about the video, the Islamist websites were all yakking about it, why else would all those people be rioting at the same time, and yet no Americans killed except in Benghazi? Remember, the first riot was in Egypt. The next day they were all over the mid-east, including Libya.

This is why I couldn't understand why the GOP was leaning on Rice and Obama. Nobody knew what the hell was really going on, Romney sure as hell got it wrong.

In my opinion, the Libya attack was almost certainly planned by Islamists to coincide with Sept 11. But there was rioting, and later, looting at Benghazi, too. The situation was very confused. As for the other attacks, if they had been organized by the same outfit, you would have seen military forces involved like in Libya. That was the only place where RPGs, heavy MGs, pickups full of trained fighters, etc were involved.

And when was it determined that "All" the attacks were the result of the video?

...and quietly asked Rice to withdraw her name. He wants a real heavyweight to take Hillary's place, and who better than another person who came so close to the White House? Also, Rice's direct and combative nature might have been a bit too much for SOS.

Unfortunately it gives the appearance Obama got rolled here.

I don't know. I've often asked that question myself.

If there's any government blame in this incident, it's on her, not on Rice. Clinton is head of the State Department. She is ultimately responsible for security in the embassies, only the President outranks her.

Remember, that night, there were 20 attacks on US embassies all over Asia, across many time zones, and there was confusion, fragmentary and conflicting reports and the usual fog of war. The first attack, in Egypt, was definitely about the video, and it now appears ALL the others were too. Only the Libya action was later shown to be an organized and planned military operation, and it seems to have taken advantage of, or at least overlapped with, a video-related street demonstration. There was the secret CIA operation going on in Libya, too, which probably complicated things. No one gets access to anything classified unless they're cleared, which slows down things considerably. You have to get people out of bed to sign releases, write memos, give briefings, send cables, decode signals. You can imagine what a Chinese fire drill that was. Even today, the approved version has not been written, and you can count that there were screw-ups somewhere along the line. When something unexpected happens, and you respond haphazardly, there are always screw-ups. That's why we have Monday morning quarterbacks.

I think the GOP went after Rice because she was easy, and because Rice was being considered to replace Clinton at State. It would embarass Obama since she was a close friend of his and she had personally dissed McCain in the past. And like Eric Holder, she was black. Yeah. That too. It's not a question of racism, its just that you have a black president and if several of his black associates are in "trouble", it looks good politically among some constituencies if you can make that link.

They knew as far as Obama was concerned, he would not stake everything on defending her, Rice was politically expendable. She was a fight not worth risking, even if he eventually won it. She got thrown under the bus for political expediency, just like Liz Warren was.

Clinton, on the other hand, is very popular in her own right, and not just with Democrats, an attack on her might have backfired. And in the middle of all this, General Petraeus, the boss at CIA, darling of the Neocons, got caught dipping the wick in his pretty colonel. And of course, it was all about the election and its aftermath. The Republicans had nothing else going for them...
