There’s a big difference in obscure ACLU papers on their website (that I’ve linked to here) and a New York Times headline shouting something like “ACLU declares Bush violating Constitution.”

I would bet if you took a hundred people off the street at random and asked them what they thought about the current wireless warrantless wiretapping controversy, they’d have no idea what you were talking about.

We would still be seeing headlines about wars, Guanatamo, renditions, warrantless wiretapping, and every other damn thing that was “spitting on the Constitution” a few years ago and (outside of a tiny leftist cadre still protesting these things off in some dark corner) apparently don’t mean a thing when a Democrat does them.

Too bad things like the Constitution or representative government keep getting in the way of, as the author puts it, “the president or one of the party leaders” reaching “a considered judgment that a particular course of action is best for the country.”

Just think how simple and efficient things would be without all that messy process, legislation, and laws of the land.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen more people with hard-ons for powerful, unrestricted, centralized authority than I have in the past few years.

“I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Until it gets in the way, I guess.
