It doesn't change the fact that even suggesting default was grossly irresponsible.

The gOP caved on this because their biggest donors told them to grow up and knock it off. The US CoC, the business roundtable, the fortune 500, etc all said to stop it or lose all support.

the unbelievably reckless attempts at extortion with the debt ceiling. We all know debt is a problem. Most people concerned know how to fix it. But this thread is about ANOTHER problem we have that you don't like to talk about.

Right.

The "cranks and crazies" who think you can't run a country forever by borrowing and printing money.

Maybe the real crazies are the ones who look at those asymptotic graphs and go "so what?"

What happened in 2011 is that the debt ceiling got raised.

We also got an idiotic fiscal cliff/sequestration deal out of it, but that's another subject. The spending cuts in the deal never took place, and never will.

Look on the bright side: if the Republicans just rolled over, who the hell would the Democrats have left to demonize?

Your party has been taken over by a bunch of cranks and crazies who have the establishment republicans shaking in their boots they'll be primaried.

Honestly, I truly hope you are right and the GOP abandons this debt ceiling madness. There's a GOP Congressman from OR who is introducing a bill to ban the $1T coin. Obama should sign the bill only if it eliminates the dangerous and idiotic debt ceiling law at the same time!.

Nobody? How about the Teatards in YOUR party? HOw about John McCain and Miss Lindsey Graham? Did you miss all the other morons from the GOP on the talk shows this past weekend?

Until REPUBLICANS IN THE HOUSE say they will raise the debt ceiling there IS a doubt. Or have you forgotten what happened in 2011?

Apparently some people have already had one.

The debt ceiling will be raised. Nobody has any doubt about that.

This is raw politics--the Democrats need to establish that simply negotiating the subject at all will wreck the country, and that we need to raise the limit without any annoying discussion about why the damn limit has to be raised multiple times and why deficits still remain at the trillion-dollar level almost four years into a supposed "recovery."

The limit will be raised. Then a while later, it will be raised again. Then again, and again, and again.

Here's another chart:

Notice any depressing trends similar to the inflation chart? This is what falling off a fiscal cliff looks like.

By the way, the complete Bipartisan Policy Center presentation is here.
