Car wrecks, the occasional police foot chase through the backyards (twice), helicopters with searchlights hovering at night over the area...pretty standard for the overgrown suburb that is San Jose. Guy's walking along the sidewalk in front of a bank, sees cops, stops and puts hands in pockets, tries to look casual. Hell, I should've started whistling just to complete the stereotype. Has a lookout, fellow with a radio, standing on the corner across from the bank. Cops roll up, lookout just stands there. Guy robs a bank. Has an accomplice who stays outside the bank to create a diversion if the police come. Cops come, guy just stands there. Guy robs a bank. Has an accomplice who will help him get away, sitting in a car half a block away. Getaway driver gets bored, takes a walk. Cops come, guy just stands there. Could be the robbery just went to hell, and the accomplice thought it best to wait it out, not try to get away, but he'd certainly have a record and the police would think twice about letting him go. Seems to me that staying calm, moving slowly and keeping one's hands in plain sight...those things are all in <i>my</i> best interest. And, to tell the truth, the situation didn't seem that dangerous. I knew I hadn't just walked out of a bank after robbing it, and that's a fairly easy proposition to prove. Plus, I'd just walked past the bank, and nothing set off alarm bells. And afterward it took me hours to decide it was even newsworthy enough to post about. Back in college, I got pulled over while driving my girlfriends car. She kept the registration in the glove department. I made it a point of telling the officer that before I went to reach for it. Since an officer had recently been killed at at simple pull-over, this officer appreciated the gesture so much he let me off with a warning - and a thank-you. Especially the jacket.
