that revenues should be exactly the same now as they were at the arbitrary point of 1999, based on 2005 dollars!?

LMAO!

Why not go back in time to revenues in 1900 and draw the line based on 1955 dollars?

You claim that revenues are not part of the problem but then reference a graph that clearly shows the dramatic decrease in revenues in 2008-9. Hello? Is anyone home?

You can see that revenues and spending are now both ticking upward over time at roughly the same pace despite the sluggish growth of the economy. Get the stupid GOP House out of the way with their continual manufactured crises and the economy will take off, then you will see that gap close.

Dude. This isn't about the revenues. Or GDP growth.

There are several charts on this thread. Look at them until it finally registers. Particularly spend some time on the "Federal receipts/outlays in 2005 U.S. dollars" one I posted again in a comment below.

Note the revenues during the glorious late 90s boom. Note the even higher revenues of 2007, when the unemployment rate was 4.5 percent, the evil Bush tax rates were in play, and the stock market had cracked 14,000. Now look at that red outlay line. Keep staring at it until the penny drops.

I had to download the graphs to my computer and then upload them to the Zone image file. Hotlinks don't seem to work.

I can repost something I put up at the beginning of the month:

The graph basically speaks for itself, but try a few experiments:

- Draw a straight line to the right from the spending levels of 1999. How much of the blue “receipt” line is above that line? How much is below it? Of those parts below it (deficits), how large are they?

- What were the tax rates in 2007? What were they in 2012? What year did the rates change? Can any reasonable mind look at this graph and say our problem is low tax rates?

- Obama’s 2013 budget estimated a 2017 outlay of $3.484 trillion (2005 dollars). Is the outlay curve rising or falling?

Hard to imagine revenues are going to cover the current spending let alone the increase in spending Obama is dangerously seeking even if taxes are raised again.

Can't get the graph to image(total revenue- gross debt).

Cool link, Thanks
