Outlook, for me.

I'm old-fashioned. I like my mail stored at home, not in someone else's server. Particularly Google's.

I had a friend bring a new laptop with Windows 8 over to show him how to use it.

I took me a while but I figured out how to bypass all the BS and make it work like most computers. It is so cluttered up if he brought it back today it would once again take me a while to figure it out. This is due to my worn out memory cells as much as the OS.

A couple of things sort of surprise me re the Vista Mail, or Microsoft Mail as it actually is. First I am mildly surprised it doesn't work fine, assuming it is up to date on your computer.

Second, I am surprised you would use a second rate Microsoft mail client. Have you ever tried Thunderbird? It is a easy to use, easy to install client and I have never known of it not working. There are no bells and whistles or decent filters to speak of but short of something like Outlook (comes with MS Office) which I use and recommend, Thunderbird is about as good as it gets, if you want a mail client vs the web app of your mail server.

I was thinking of building the wife a new machine to try out Windows 8. I found a refurbished HP for $318. 8 gigs of ram, terabyte sata hard drive, 2gz proc, Windows 7 64bit, pci-e. Don't think I could build one for that price. And I not going to wipe it to give 8 a try.

The dealer probably would have put Windows 7 on it if you'd asked them.
 I wouldn't touch Windows 8 with a ten-foot pole.

It might almost be worth scrubbing it and installing 7, but talk to the dealer first before you spend the money. They might be helpful.

I typically update Windows operating systems when I absolutely have to, i.e. when my software demands it. I got this computer with WinXP 64 bit installed after Win7 had already been out for a long time. I had to scrub the system down to install it. There's no direct upgrade path to Win7 from XP, and I never went near Vista.

I didn't have any of my own software or setting installed yet, and it was a convenient time to make the jump.

I adapted to the differences, and now routinely switch between XP systems and 7 systems. Not to mention Mac OSX on my family's computers.
