I got to like shaving so much I went from a full beard (neck and cheek shaving only) to a circle beard.
Had the unfortunate effect of concentrating the grey all in one spot, but otherwise, it suits me

None of your canned goo rubbish. Half the fun of going back to a more traditional wet shave was discovering a world of soaps, creams and badger/boar/horse brushes.
CO Bigelow cream, Mystic Waters soap and Arko stick currently top my list.

Yes I think I can get a better shave with cold lather, cold brush, cold water.
I think the hairs stay in place and are less likely to bend under the razor edge. I get less irritation on the neck doing it this way.
My favorite shaving soap - Mystic Waters Bay Rum - also prefers to be cold or tepid or else I get disappearing lather syndrome.

There's one teeny problem with it for me.......I don't like the feel very much. Especially in a PA winter. Much prefer my lather to be warmer at least for the first pass.

I use a plastic attachment on my shaver that keeps the blades several millimeters from my face. I only shave a couple times a week.

My own opinion is that hot/warm water will soften the whiskers more than cold water, but that's just a guess. I know barbers used to use a hot towel to prep one's face for the shave.

probably more important is the lubrication added by a good shaving soap

Have you tried shaving with cold water? I think I get a good shave and much less skin irritation using cold water.

I think in part the benefit may be due to the physical properties of a steel blade. Cold steel should have a smoother edge.

What say ye?
