just a wild-ass guess. But there are some aspects here that led me to consider it. Patriot's Day is often used by right-wing militias to celebrate their fancied connection with the patriots of 1776. Also, did you know this Marathon was dedicated to the Newtown victims? Did you know a group of Newtown survivors were guests and had seats near the site of the explosion? What bettter way to embarass and humiliate those liberal commies who are trying to take away our guns? And as I mentioned in another post, this attack was about embarassing and humiliating, its a punishment, it has no tactical, strategic, or propaganda value. This reeks of Newtown Truther mentality.

It was Income Tax day, too. The wacko Right seems to think they are the only people in the world who resent paying taxes. And of course, Obama can no longer claim he has protected America from terrorist attacks.

But most important, you would think that some Arabist terror gang would immediately call in and take credit for this attack. There hasn't been a peep out of those guys.

Of course, these are all speculations on my part. After all, the Islamists are not dumb either, what better way to cover your tracks and cover your trail than pretend you are somebody else?

Its still too early to tell yet, and this sort of game is best left to the pros. Not only do they know what they're doing, they know a lot more than we do. They also know more than they're saying.

We're just going to have to wait and find out.

After you said that I noticed the white smoke which is indicative of black powder, a common run-of-the-mill explosive.

I suspect it to be true, and my brother called me with the exact same suspicion. I don't know why, because so far absolutely no information has been made public about the motivations or ideologies of the perpetrators. The authorities may not even know themselves, or if they know, they may choose not to publicize it for reasons of their own.

Its still a little early to tell anything. Speculations have a way of becoming accepted as fact, it pays to be cautious at this point.

These are cheap, easily modifiable, and readily available containers capable of containing great internal pressures before they finally shatter.

When combined with low-grade explosives, such as gunpowder, you get a vessel that can maintain its integrity until combustion of the propellant is complete, which obviates the need for more sophisticated explosives. I've heard these bombs (not confirmed yet, the press is infuratingly slow about these technical issues) were fueled with gunpowder, the same kind used by firearms enthusiasts to load their own cartridges.

Even making gunpowder is easy, We developed some pretty potent stuff in high school, using charcoal, sulfur and a saltpeter substitute we stole from chem lab. The delivery system was empty CO2 cartidges from air rifles.
