Far across the Atalntic, off the coast of Africa, are a group of volcanic islands, the Canaries or the Azores, I don't recall which, where a huge volcanic peak is a catastrophe just waiting to happen.

The mountain has a great fault in its water-logged, decayed and crumbling volcanic slopes. One day, perhaps tomorrow, perhaps not for thousands of years, that fault will give way and the mountain will slide into the Atlantic abyssal plain below.

The water displaced will generate a tsunami which will race across the Atlantic basin and and devastate the east coast of North America.
We know this is possible because its happened once before, centuries ago, and geologists have mapped the debris it left on the coastal plain of the Carolinas, miles inland and hundreds of feet above the high tide mark.

The Bahamas are Florida's natural breakwater. They are a few exposed sand bars on the Great Bahama Bank, a vast plateau reaching up to sea level from the deep sea just a few miles offshore from the Florida coastline. The bank is shallow, much of it is unnavigable, in fact, you can walk across large parts of it. It is teeming with coral reefs and marine life.

The great wave will spend its energy climbing up the abyssal slope of the Bank, and break over the islands. The destruction will be horrific, I only hope science will be able to give us enough warning so those folks can be evacuated.

I don't know much about the Bahamas, I've only been there once, and only briefly. But I remember a friendly, good-natured, fun-loving people.
