There’s a lot of pithy folk wisdom like that going around. One of my colleagues in Mountain View used to say “Never have an affair with a woman who lives in the same county you do.” Or Douglas MacArthur’s reputed advice to JFK; “Never get involved in a land war in Asia.”

- Never play cards with a man called Doc - Never eat at a place called Mom's The original quote from his book Walk on the Wild Side has two more laws:

"But blow wise to this, buddy, blow wise to this: Never play cards with a man called Doc. Never eat at a place called Mom’s. Never sleep with a woman whose troubles are worse than your own. Never let nobody talk you into shaking another man’s jolt. And never you cop another man’s plea."

I have no idea what the actual fourth law means ("jolt?"), although there are theories.

The only Algren I know was Nelson Algren. I believe he was a writer, but I never read any of his books.

Algren’s Third Law:

One of my laws is never watch cable news. It’ll make you crazier than the people you want to sleep with.
