When the rest of society seemed on the verge of urban warfare, the Navy quietly and methodically did the job. My first Division Petty Officer was black, mean and ornery, but a superb seaman and scrupulously fair. I have no doubt this problem will be solved as well, it is intrinsically a much easier one, provided it doesn't get politicized.

Too much testosterone, "he said - she said", no commander wanting to deal with it.

I think the situation now is much, much better than it has been. It's being talked about, there are ombudsmen and women, and there are more women.

I'd give credit to the military for facing it.

There's never any doubt who your mother is.

Primitive nomadic cultures usually have much more egalitarian relations between sexes. Once Man settled down in fixed agricultural communities, inheritance and ownership of property mandated cultural mechanisms to specify and ensure ownership of land. The concept of "legitimacy" suddenly became vital, and with it the owership of women by men. To put it bluntly, nobody wanted anyone elses kid to inherit their stuff. To avoid this, women had to be placed in purdah and viewed as chattel.

Monotheism probably played a big role, too. In the Judeo-Christo-Islamic tradition, the Deity is fiercely male, and the goddeses of the old pantheistic faiths forgotten.

Shrine of the Virgin Athena, goddess of wisdom, in the Parthenon. "Parthenos" is Attic Greek for "Virgin"

LIFE by Cynthia Occelli
Reflecting on the world during a conversation this morning and came away feeling incredulous. How is it that women--the beings who've carried and sustained ALL of civilization--could ever be considered lesser beings, or dispensable objects with troublesome tendencies that require or deserve judgment and domination? How did we get here? We live in a world where so many are blind to WHAT IS. Everyone owes their life to a woman.

(Save the retort "and to a man". We get it, but women at large aren't molesting, mutilating, selling, and demeaning men.)
