N of Tampa it merges with 19 and ALT 27 . What little is left of the Old Florida is there, and its a beautiful ride, especiallly in the rain. It actually looks a lot more like Kentucky, or at least, what Kentucky is supposed to look like.

When you get to the Panhandle, avoid I-10. The coast road is the obvious route if you're not sick of beaches by now and if you've got time to burn, but I've never been on it myself. But I have been on 20 heading W along the Panhandle, after a short cut through 267. It is absolutely gorgeous, real Faulkner Country. Decent Cuban Restaurant in Bristol, too.

Way down u-pon de Swanneee ribbah...

I would love to see Ybor City. And, frankly, at this point I am sick of the urban East Coast. I don't want to deal with Tampa, Tallahassee, interstates or turnpikes.

I'm going to follow highway 98 along the coast, although I may stay another day here. I understand there is a great park about 10 miles away.

By the way, the lake from which I was going to get my alligator doesn't have any, just bass. I have that on good local authority, who was kind enough not to ask what I was doing with the rope, duct tape and extra shoe and sock.

Its mostly a tourist trap now, but it still looks a lot like it did 60 years ago, and there are a couple of decent museums there that tell the story of how the Cubans civilized the Crackers.

Then spend the night at Fort Desoto Park (at Mullet Key, South of St. Pete, at the entrance to Tampa Bay) on your way out. Watch out for the mosquitoes there. Get window screens for the Bowzermobile.
