I remember Dad liking my hand made birthday cards.

Some people pride themselves at NOT complimenting...they wear it like a badge.

My kids think I am awesome....for real...which means I did something right. God knows I worked hard, long and fair bringing those babies up. It is my crowning achievement.

most of us are just fine without them but we enjoy the occasional ego booster.

Over the years I have gotten far more compliments than I deserve, some sincere, some brown nosing. I usually know the difference.

The compliment that always comes to the top was from my youngest daughter, after a long bike ride with her when she was about 10. We were sitting in the living room and she came over and put her arm around me and said, "you are the best Daddy in the whole wide world".

I doubt that I deserved that one because I have not gotten many like it from my children over the years. Nevertheless, it was priceless and unforgettable.

NO COMMENT. :)

I love to compliment people. I always say thank you when and if I get one.
My idea of a compliment is different I think than what other people consider.

Case in point...I told my best bud Darin, that I was grateful for his friendship. I told him that he had an incredible knack for tolerating difficult people.
He told me how wonderful the food was in New Orleans and how much fun it is to sample all of it.
He made me realize that I miss out worrying about my weight and never fully engaging in excursions. I thanked him for starting to help me realize that.

I am getting better at telling Mom what I loved about my childhood...which is sad, because she doesn't remember any of it.

That is, that they feel they are diminished if they admit to a failing and that they are diminished if someone other than them has some admirable quality or possession.

Obviously, and as you fear, there are those who foster the ability to compliment in order to gain regard from the complimented party.

I've always thought that the world is made more needlessly dreary by people who learn that there is nothing admirable about themselves since no one ever says anything to the contrary (after you've passed kindergarten). I think it's a duty to say something out loud when it occurs to me that someone has something worthy of praise. If I keep it to myself, then I've done something hateful. And if someone thinks I'm currying favor, then so be it.
