I think that problem went away over time as debit cards came to be used as credit cards interchangably. The people you hand the card to usually don’t even ask if there’s a credit line attached to the checking, any more.

My American Express card has no interest rate at all.

Must be paid in full every month. Not cost-free–there is a small annual fee. It was the first major credit card I ever got that wasn’t from a department store, and the iron discipline of not being able to “roll over” debt probably saved my young ass.

We have several conventional Visa/Mastercard cards nowadays, with rates ranging from 8 to 16 percent.
