No, I’m not going expend any energy indignantly spouting off on the Supreme Court’s latest party-line rulings. Its too late to do anything about them, and you probably already know how I feel about them, pro or con. What’s the point?
But I still reserve the right to occasionally surprise you. I agree with the Court’s decision on Affirmative Action, and I think it should have gone further. I always felt this was an ill-considered idea, and whatever value it might have had in the past diminishes rapidly every year that passes.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all in favor of the Law coming down hard on people who discriminate, and on all forms of bigotry. After all, that’s the main reason we have laws, to protect the weak from abuse by the strong, whether it be political, social or economic. Everything else is just bookeeping.
But giving special consideration to some, and putting obstacles in front of others, because of something that happened in the past they had nothing to do with is just not fair, and its not right. And I don’t think it ultimately helps anyone or rights any wrongs. No black today was ever a slave, and no white today ever owned any. We should not be punished for the acts of our ancestors, or rewarded for the injustices inflicted on them, either.
Do injustices and obstacles still exist which can be traced back to our sad history? Of course. Ask the Native Americans if you’re not convinced of that. But the questions we should be asking is who to rescue from, and who to punish for, present injustices.
I don’t believe in Original Sin or in Salvation.
