As usual you can follow the money for the political reasons for or against our energy and environmental policies in the USA.

Obama's good chum Warren Buffett is a good example of how there hypocritical logic is bad for all the people, not only financially but environmentally.

Some snips from here: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-01-23/buffett-s-burlington-northern-among-winners-in-obama-rejection-of-pipeline.html

"Warren Buffett’s Burlington Northern Santa Fe LLC is among U.S. and Canadian railroads that stand to benefit from the Obama administration’s decision to reject TransCanada Corp. (TRP)’s Keystone XL oil pipeline permit."

"Shipping oil using tank cars on rail costs about $3 more a barrel than pipeline transport"

"Shipping oil using tank cars on rail costs about $3 more a barrel than pipeline transport, using prices in North Dakota, a differential “unlikely” to slow the development of oil sands crude if no pipeline is build, the State Department said."

Don't know if it's true but they say trains hauling oil have increase 28000% in the last 5 years. The more trains, the greater the odds of an accident, regardless of the cause of the accident.

I have a friend who works for a company that cleans up derailments in the Northwest. Seems he goes out at least once a month.

Shit happens. In any complex system, accidents and breakdowns will occur.

And it happens in pipelines, too. They just aren't reported as much in the oil-industry controlled American press--because of politics.

Try googling "Canadian pipeline spills"...

As I read your posts, I'm gathering that the Canadian train disaster was not the fault of a lack of understanding on the part of the fire department, not negligence on the part of the train company, but

SOMEHOW DUE TO OPPONENTS OF THE KEYSTONE PIPELINE!

I'm going to ask if that's true. Is it? That those people up and down the US who don't want oil running through their backyards are the reason that town blew up? And that the Keystone line would be done now, and that train wouldn't be there? Is that what you're saying? Because it sounds like it.

If that is true, the implication is that pipelines are safe, foolproof, environmentally friendly. Are you throwing that in for good measure? People shouldn't have trains with oil running through the neighborhood occasionally, but should have the continual presence of oil in a pipeline?

I'm just checking. When one hears something which seems silly coming from an otherwise level-headed, sensible, understandable guy one should give the benefit of the doubt.
