I've known 8 or 10 people who have had it done and every single one reports a changed for the better life immediately. I wish you the best, Frank.

I doubt Frank will go for it, but I believe ER and I could do this far less expensively, far faster and at home. I'm thinking this is simply a miniature plumbing job, requiring tools available at Harbor Freight for a modest amount.

Anesthesia is a problem, but there is always Scotch and we are fast, real fast. The results are immediate, and I'm sure he'd jump right up ready to go into action as soon as we were done.

I doubt, though, that Frank wants to save money or time. And it's a shame. I believe if we all worked together we could work miracles in saving medical costs. I know I'm always available for minor and moderate surgeries at a small fraction of the price of a physician. Cheaper than a plumber, even.

I have this bottle of powdered mustard seed that I bought before I learned (tonight) that it needs moisture, preferably some kind of vinegar/acidic like "young" wine, to bring out the flavor. Wondered why it tasted so bland just sprinkled on food.

Hmmm...

OMG! My eyes are burning! Added a little balsamic vinegar to the powdered mustard, and got something that tasted just like horseradish. Wow! That is a dramatic change, from bland dry powder to three-alarm just add vinegar.

Now I understand the title: That mustard got all medieval on me. Damn.

Good recipe, Frank. I think I have a third-degree burn on my tongue, but good recipe. Thanks.

I found this recipe for Medieval Mustard and it seems that the mustard goes from mustard seeds to the finished product without any fermentation that would create the crust they described.

It is not hard to imagine that mustard would film over, if left in an open container but not to the extent of requiring a special knife to remove it.

I'm a little suspicious--that story is too pat and too lucid for a common metaphor. Usually you get several alternative origin stories, none of 'em quite right.

I went on a search for "mustardeer", and didn't encounter any authoritative definitions. The word shows up on the net a lot as a username/handle, and in the name of a ketchup company, and generally in random ways...but I didn't find any straightforward definition, and the wikipedia article on mustard never mentioned a "mustardeer" involved in the production of mustard.

So I'm leaning toward judging the term "mustardeer" apocryphal, and probably stories like the one from urbandictionary that are based on it are flights of fancy too.

I like etymology, too, because there's always a little mystery to solve when you start digging into words.

BTW, at urbandictionary I searched on the variation "cut the mustard", got that one first, plus several more. This one seems to be a derivative of the phrase (and the other results were irrelevant):

2. cut the mustard

Men who are unable to "cut the mustard" can more than compensate by simply LICKING THE LID.

She: What's the matter, Mr. Softee? Can't cut the mustard?

He: Don't worry, I'll just lick the lid instead.

She: Oooh, you lover boy, you!
