It took 7 pounds of grain to raise one pound of meat, so the government promoted a diet heavy on the meat protein. THEN

They learned they could in effect trade grain for oil. The government all at once realized that meat lead to coronary problems and many others. SO, they started promoting diets more heavily vegetarian and with less meat.

It was all political.

We have oversight of food, health and services and it's a good thing. Are they perfect? Hell no and adjustments are made as the science is applied. Eggs were bad for you, now they are OK as an example.

There are articles from Scientist a few years back saying salt wasn't all that bad for and reducing it to much could lead to health problems and they were right. That's not to say eating all the salt you want is OK, but like all food and drink consumed moderation is the key.

The point I was making is we don't need the Bloombergs telling us how it's going to be. We can take the important information provided to us regarding consumption quantities and make reasonable judgments ourselves based on our bodies and also doctor recommendations as we are not all the same.

"His form is ungainly, his intellect small
(So the Bellman would often remark)
But his courage is perfect! And that, after all,
Is the thing that one needs with a Snark."

your solution is always the same; the one that involves the least inconvenience for the perpetrator.

As for the other comment, I wanted to make sure you didn't miss the picture.

<p>Suppose I was discussing abuse of traffic cameras by police and other authorities.</p>

Someone pipes up with "well, I guess your solution is to get rid of traffic laws and let people drive on both sides of the road."

That would be an idiot answer. So was that one.

Bowser pointed out a real problem with the current regulation model. Even if we assume honesty, there will always be fallability.

There are models worth looking into that would encourage competition in the field of regulation as well as those being regulated. There is the experience of history, associations, and other things that dealt with these problems before someone decided only the Federal Government was the answer. I doubt it's worth the effort trying to discuss any of that here.

And dammit, learn to size pictures.

We simply simply dismantle the entire regulatory apparatus and let the free market protect us. If enough people get sick or die from consuming a product, sooner or later people will stop buying it. After all, no one is putting a gun to their heads and making them buy it.

These agencies of the US government are so much under the control of industry that none of the information they disseminate can be trusted. It may be true, may not, but whatever it is it favors the status quo for industry.

This particular bit of info means the food industry doesn't have to change a thing, and is in fact doing what is healthiest for the population.

I have trouble believing that.

<p>I should have used the term "total control."</p>

It would have been clearer.

A regulator on a steam locomotive is designed to keep the engine from overspeed or overpressure.

It is not intended to control where the locomotive runs, what its operating hours are, what color it gets painted, how many wheels it should have, what brand of coal it burns, how much the crew gets paid, what type of leather is on the seats, or any of the thousands of other micromanagement elements that are the vast majority of modern "regulations."

Even you should see the difference between a rule that keeps a business from dumping toxic waste into a river and one that tells it what kind of trees it can plant near the building or what kind of lightbulbs it can use.

It's amazing the faith you have in people in government to oversee everything without self-interest, corruption, greed, or multiple other human failings. I wonder what they do to normal mortals as they cross the borders of Washington DC that makes them so much more fit to run our lives than the rest of us are.

Where does it come into people's heads that it's better to have the reins in the hands of monopolized state power, most of it unaccountable to the electorate, instead of a large number of freely competitive alternatives?

Who decides, Robert?

That was actually the most important part of my post.
