http://elpdefensenews.blogspot.com/2011/11/f-35-officially-7-years-late-for-usaf.html

"The United States Air Force (USAF) has officially stated that initial operating capability (IOC) for the F-35 won't happen until sometime in 2018. This was sort of expected when looking at the tea leaves over the past several months.

"F-35 IOC for the USAF is now 7 years late compared to the original plan back in 2001.

"Trends and program progress would indicate this will slip again."

This is a computer driven plane, and 20% of the code hasn't even been written yet.

The Russians and Chinese (with Russian engines) are proceeding along apparently nicely. They are able to abort losing ideas and focus upon what works. And are stealing US technology.

I could look it up, but some aviation experts say that both the Russians and Chinese will have better airplanes deployed before the F-35 is completed.

It's really a disaster.

In WWII, the first versions of warplanes brought out problems and errors that turned up during operations, and later versions incorporated corrections and upgrades based on comments by the pilots and crews that flew and maintained the aircraft. Eventually, the plane simply became obsolete, and was burdened down with so many changes and modifications that the original design concepts were compromised, (many simply tacked on to give the aircraft new capabilities and missions never planned for by their designers). But by then, the airplane had developed a constituency, and it was too cumbersome to retool and introduce a new model, with all its probable bugs and kinks and training for its users that a new system made necessary.

Even highly successful and adaptable designs like the Bf 109 and the Spitfire were designed in the 30s, but fought though the entire war constantly upgraded and improved. But the pilots and crews still missed the earlier versions (although not necessarily the earliest) simply because they flew and fought better.

<p>The point, and there was one...</p>

is that defense contractors and workers are not all Republican white-collar workers, and that many, in fact, are union members who are on the front lines of defense cuts.

The phrase "highly-paid" came from ER, and he was the one complaining about it, not me.

"Doesn't bother me a bit?" You have a retention problem. I am on record multiple times as opposing the bank bailouts, and have reminded people here of this more than a few times.

One typical quote from January 2012:

<blockquote>"The only real result of the bailouts was that the crooks were rewarded, the more responsible banks punished, and the same crap is still going on as I write this."</blockquote>
