Synergy:

a) Make sure no states have any sort of voter ID.

b) Make eleven million illegal immigrants legal residents.

I had a conversation here a while back pointing out that the legal voter kept from voting personally at the polls by lack of a photo ID card, and somehow at the same time completely unable to vote by mail or provisional ballot, was largely mythological. Certainly you don't need a picture ID to register.

Wrong or right, the point was about the intention of the voter laws. Enough rabbit-holing for me.

That just maybe Gleason might be wrong about the cause of the margin differences?

In point of fact, Obama's margins in a number of places was less than it was in 2008. His popular vote margin nationally in 2008 was 7.3 percent, and only 3.85 percent in 2012.

In Illinois, a generally Democratic state with no voter ID law, the popular vote margin for Obama was 25 points in 2008, and only 17 points in 2012.

See TB's posts on the subject for more. Is that what you mean?

Or, to state the issue in simple language (though I've done it here before):

Voter ID laws and other laws that make it more complicated to vote than it used to be are a ploy by Republican run state legislatures to discourage more liberals from voting than it discourages conservatives from voting. This results in a net win for Republicans. I think it is downright immoral to do this in a democracy.

The denialists say that there are innocent reasons for passing all these laws. But when one of the guys in charge of the Republican party says something like : "Think about this, we cut Obama by five percent, which was big. A lot of people lost sight of that. He won, he beat McCain by 10 percent, he only beat Romney by five percent. I think that probably voter ID helped a bit in that."
or when one of the guys promoting such laws says "Voter ID, which is gonna allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania, done,”,
then I think it's pretty clear what the reason for passing these laws really is.

Did I make it plain, this time? Or did I miss it again?

If voter ID scares the people who shouldn't be voting in the first place, I'm all for it.

The United Nations voter monitors who were here for the last election were shocked that we don't require everybody to show their ID when voting. For some reason the USA cries foul when he rest of the world uses voter ID.

Obama at his latest trip to Africa lectured them on how they should enforce voter ID when voting. Funny how it is ok in Africa but not in the USA.
