We often use the pointer to get her to come out of hiding or to direct her into some other part of the house.

Don't worry about teasing the cat with the laser. Mine is perfectly aware she can never catch the light, she just enjoys trying. And she is perfectly aware that we control the light, too. She doesn't think its a little red bug that runs around on the floor, she knows she is playing with us. When I let the bug move up the wall towards the ceiling where she can't reach it, she turns around and looks directly at me and gives her "give me" call. She knows I control the light.

We keep the laser pointer in a big porcelain dish by the door that catches all the overflow; keys, pocket change, pens, and other odds and ends. Whenever we stick our hand in there to get something she recognizes the sound and comes to play, no matter where else in the house she might be. Sometimes she even digs the pointer out of the dish, just to get our attention. If we don't accomodate her, she nags at us until we do.

Cats are smarter than dogs, they are just smarter in a different way and we don't always recognize it. They see the universe differently. Unlike dogs, who have either been selected or evolved to be similiar to us, cats see the world from a different perspective than we, or dogs, do. Maybe its because they are not pack animals, but solitary hunters. I don't know why, but they are truly alien. Its why I love cats and don't care much for dogs. Dogs are sycophants, they will kiss your ass shamelessly, a cat would never do that.

If your cat is a house cat, put a bell on her so you can keep track of where she is. If she goes outside, don't. She deserves to hunt unencumbered..
