Everybody knows damn well what a “progressive” is, and why they keep having to change their name over the years.

People wondering for themselves are welcome to check out this little compilation I posted here last year. One list is from the Congressional Progressive Caucus, one from the American Communist Party, and one was from a “Citizen Agenda” that was being circulated at the time. I invited people to guess which was which.

You thought these were all basically swell ideas, although you had a problem with the “hate speech” bit.

There’s more to this than labels, or whether somebody’s wearing a hat with a red star on it. This is about ideas.

Look at it this way: there are no more communists. There are just a whole bunch of people who believe all the same things communists believed about how to organize a society, run an economy, and create a government free of any annoying political opposition.

As I said on that thread:

People can call them ostriches if that works for them.

I don’t see a new President Clinton meeting my needs either. She’s nowhere near as progressive as her enemies claim she is. I guess I’ll have to wait for President Warren.

There is no Progressive dictatorship. There are no Progressive gulags, Progressive secret police, or Progressives breaking down doors in the night. There are no Progressive tanks rolling over plutocrats, and no Progressives building death zones to keep their plutocrats in.

There is no Libertarian Paradise, its a pathetic utopian fantasy straight out of Ayn Rand and Robert Heinlein; an imaginary world of Social Darwism gone amok, inhabited by those whose failure to achieve happiness and self-actualization can be conveniently blamed on the dreaded Statists. Libertarianland does not exist. Nowhere on the planet. Never in history. It is even more ridiculous than the Socialist Worker’s paradise ever was. The closest thing you’ll ever come to it is the country you live in right now, which you appear to loathe, considering your desire to return to some idealized past that never existed either.

No Tom. All your horror stories about the communists are the same old bogeymen the plutocrats have always conjured up to keep the booboisie voting against their own economic self-interest. There are no communists, TB. We won the Cold War, remember? The old Iron Curtain empires, China and Russia, are turning into the same kind of Capitalist Gangster Gilded Age States you are so nostalgic about. Brutal dictatorships run by corporate councils.

But you need them Commies, don’t you? Just like the Palestinians need Zionists, and the Nazis needed Jews.
