The light at the end of the tunnel July 26, 2013 7:02 pm ER

It’s almost over.

The orgy of home improvement we started last October is finally approaching completion. All that remains now is for them to remodel the master bathroom, and since we’ve just finished the guest bathroom, whose dimensions and proposed materials are identical, we know exactly what we’re in for. Here’s the chronicle.

In October we had the roof tiles cleaned, painted and sealed, and the exterior of the house patched and painted.

November we ripped out the old clamshell hurricane shutters and replaced them with accordion shutters.

December, we had the front porch retiled

January, gutters and downspouts were put up all around the house.

February, all the interior carpet was ripped up and replaced with wood laminate flooring.

March, all interior walls and ceilings were painted throughout the house.

April, the garage was painted and patched, floors and walls.

May, work began on remodeling the guest bathroom. It was completed near the end of July.

Work on the master bathroom is scheduled to begin next month. Hopefully, work should proceed faster than the guest bog, since the contractor has had a chance to get familiar with the labyrinthine permitting system in our town. It should be the last item, since we had our kitchen done and our AC replaced about 4 years ago.

I’ve kind of let the place slide. I’m happy I’ve finally had the chance to get some of the household repairs caught up.

Yesterday, we went to the stupormarket and I found a really neat rubber dinosaur about 6″ long (Anklyosaurus, very detailed and anatomically correct). Figuring some kid dropped his toy, I returned it to the front counter, where I was informed they sold those toys there. I was impressed by their realism and finish, so I went back and got the whole set. There will now be a dinosaur in every room in the house, unobtrusively lurking in bookshelves, peering from the tops of cabinets and dressers, on windowsills, on top of bathroom medicine cabinets, on headboards, the stereo–everywhere you look.

It is the perfect finishing touch.
