…(actually, I got laid off like almost everybody else – if that can be called survival, I’m not certain) there was a point when they said, “If you want anything besides electronics or furniture, just take it to your car.” So I saw a whiteboard and thought it would be a really cool thing to have.

I took it home and put it on a wall, and never used it. It hung there for many years till I got tired of its mockery and I set it out at the curb where, I assume, somebody else thought it was a really cool thing to have.

I know whiteboards (you write on them with special colored ink markers) are common now (I used them at work) but I didn’t realize the black (or dark green) boards you wrote on with chalk are no longer being made.

I don’t know why, but that makes me feel sad. Chalk dust was messy, but I didn’t mind having it on my clothes.

They’re called whiteboards instead of blackboards because that’s what they are now.

White plastic (or whatever) boards that people write on with wipe-off pen. Blackboards, which had to be dark because chalk is white, were originally made of slate, but most of the ones of my youth were probably just special black or dark green paint on a board or something.
