My next move was to drive a screwdriver through it and use that. Every post said it was messy as could be, and I decided the hell with it. I called the local Jiffy Lube, knowing I'd get stabbed but had no choice.

They said they could do it, I added 5 quarts of expensive oil and miraculously the scrunched filter didn't leak. Drove there, the Manager asked if I just wanted the filter loosened. Yep. OK. If you brought a filter we'll put it on, and if you brought some oil we'll top it off. Well, OK.

The guy loosened it with a wrench almost as wide as the filter, they replaced the filter, topped it off with my oil.

I was ecstatic. Delighted.

The Manager said I could drive it away, no charge. No, really. No charge. Where do you guys usually eat lunch? There's a Subway right up the street.

I got five $8 gift certificates and gave every employee on duty one. It was cheap.

Been there, done that.

There's a weird gripping tool that supposedly helps, but who wants to buy a special tool just for this?

Of course, it's been a lot of years since I changed my own oil. Filters used to be more accessible, and you could even rent lifts at some places.

The secret to avoiding this was dipping your finger in fresh oil and rubbing it on the new filter gasket before screwing it on, and then only to a certain tightness. There was a rule (a certain fraction past finger tight) but I forgot it.
