According to James Blaylock they are anarchistic followers of the Fisher King. Or something like that - it's been a while since I read 'The Paper Grail'.

I don’t’ think it’s a “look at me” sorta thing. It’s more like “see us”.

The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq saw popular support for the troops regardless of whether the wars were seen as just. I think people in this country feel a need (and hopefully some guilt) to include the Nam vets in the recognition of sacrifice and service.

I know Nam vets who have “come out” in the last few years. One joined a motorcycle club for Vietnam vets, not an “outlaw” club but one where they ride Honda Goldwings as well as Harley Roadkings. They are involved in the community and raise money for charities in the region.

Another friend is now notably comfortable with his service and finally sat down and told us the story of his 16 months overseas. It reminded me a lot of the TV series MASH.

If I remember right, you were there. You are obviously going to have a different, and personal viewpoint. I was 9 when the war ended.

What they did in school, or that winning season, or the military, or that backpack trip to Europe, was the high point of their lives. After that came marriage, work, children, responsibility, a lifetime of quiet desperation---and that if they were fortunate and spared by tragedy. And one day they wake up facing their mortality.

Be gentle with them.
