The ball’s in Congress’s court, now. Lets see if they field it, give him a straight yes or no, or stall him and try to avoid taking responsibility and play their usual obstruction games. I’m looking forward to watching the Tparty deal with this. If they veto BHO, they’re going to have to take the heat for whatever happens in Syria. If they give him the go-ahead, they get to either share the glory or the blame, depending on how it turns out. It couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of guys.
As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t believe POTUS should have the authority to declare war, except in emergency circumstances, such as responding to a direct attack or pre-empting or deterring an immediate threat, which is clearly not the case here.
Punishing Syria for using WMDs has its pros and cons and, rightly or wrongly, Obama believes we should go for it. The do-nothing Congress has been consulted. Lets see if they are willing to get off their ass and do something for a change.
Then again, maybe the House will demand some relevant preconditions before authorizing a military strike–like dismantling Obamacare or repealing Roe v Wade.
