Well, around 10 years ago, but here at HabitableZone, we had a lively discussion going on regarding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, with the supposition that these were escaping Western eyes by being transported across Syria's very pourous borders. I wonder if we could trace any of those chemicals back and, if so, if this would raise the UN's brows enough to wonder at other -- larger -- weapons...?

If I were the one of the Middle Eastern Nations that are in conflict with Israel. I would cozy up to the USA and out-friendly Israel (which shouldn't be hard. We are constantly in conflict with Mossad)

It wouldn't be long before we start laying down the law to Israel for messing with the friendly Palestinians. They are great negotiators they just need to stop hating on us, at least in public. Wear some I heart USA T shirts and have a parade when we visit.

But nooo, they are filled with hubris in spite of the fact that their perception of honor is culturally different from ours. Lies and deception are considered acceptable in any negotiation. They might have us in their pocket if they used their skills and forget about their stupid religion that is at least as dumb as American holy rollers.

Do they really think that their relationship with Russia and China counterbalances the grief that we have and probably will heap on them as long as the current situation is static

One gets to the point where one is in awe that all the money and brainpower the US has finds it's highest expression in the Middle East.

It's hard to believe how anyone could do a worse job than the US has done and it's getting to the point that crying is pointless and laughing is the only rational reaction.

And anyone who tries to defend any action, any action at all that the US has perpetrated is a fool.

These are just a couple. The Israeli tail attacks it's neighbors routinely, always citing some provocation or another, and leaving out the part where they have been shelling cities or attacking military features first.

The US dog protects them from any meaningful retribution.

As one who truly advocated for the Israeli underdog and finally red many historys of the area, I'm sick and tired of Israel's foreign policy and America's hypocritical involvement in the mix.

Over half of America's foreign aid goes to Israel. The US also "loans" Israel money, and has a law in effect that the US will make any payment on any loan which is missed by the Israelis. In other words, even the "loans" are gifts.

Even if Assad sincerely wants to give them up, we can't afford to take his word for it, and there is no way to verify he has done so while there's a war going on over there.

There is only one way this can be realistically resolved now, short of a strike which it seems Congress and the American people will not tolerate. We issue Assad an ultimatum that if he ever uses chems again, he can expect we will hit him with the full shock and awe treatment, no questions asked. The Congress has to back the President up on that, too, and ratify it. No one else need be consulted. Screw the Russians and the UN.

No matter what Assad says we declare publicly our intention to do so anyway at the first sign of chemical warfare on his part, and make sure the Congress gives the President the authority to do so at his discretion, immediately. This time there will be no last minute surprises. Yeah, I know its a blank check, but with a little luck it will never have to be cashed.

This is the only way I can see that the nation's reluctance to go to war is respected, Obama follows the constitution, the staus quo in Syria is not disrupted by external meddling, and others contemplating the use of NBC weapons will know we mean business.

I don't see how Congress could deny that authority when we have already given Assad two warnings, which is more than fair. If we don't strike him out if he swings a third time no one will believe anything we say.

If Congress refuses to support the President, then there's nothing we can do but pick up our marbles and retreat to Fortress America.

Israel attacked Syria, too, But Israel had plenty of provocation, The Syrian Army was massing on her borders. And Israel has never used her WMDs, and certainly not on her own people.

Israel has nothing to do with this, other than as the usual fall-back excuse Arabs go for every time they get their ass caught in a wringer. I have lots of problems with Israel's foreign policy, but this is not one of them.

They can't be sure we won't hit them. As the BBC said Saddam dicked around with the UN for nearly a year before the SHTF.

And, as I said above those guys dearly love mind fucking the Infidels. They could be doing it for the sheer joy of seeing us twist in the wind. Lying and deception is not a character issue in their culture.

Both sides in Syria hate us, so screw them. As I read somewhere, "Let Allah sort it out"

Israel has attacked Syria before without provocation, and no one called upon Israel to give up the nukes.

If Syria is asked to give up WMDs, then so should Israel, the US, and the European countries.
