And in Sudbury, too. Not the same mine, but similar: the ear-popping descent while rock walls hurry past, the headlamps, hard hats and steel toed boots; disposable safety goggles. Didn't notice if she had her "brass", a small metal tag that keeps track of who entered the mine. And if they came out again.

You'd think that mines would be closed, cramped places. Well, they are that, back at the face or in the stope or in the refuge chamber / break room. However, there is almost no limit to the volume of single rooms they can carve out. So long as the engineering is done right they can create spaces the size of aircraft hangers - and bigger. I've seen machine shops a mile underground that are bigger than any I've seen above ground.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

I had read of the detector many times, but had never actually seen it.

Nice tour. Short, but nice.

Thx, Jody.

The next phase:

Here.

This time they have to fill the sphere with an organic liquid that's actually lighter than the water surrounding the sphere's exterior, so they need cables to hold the sphere down, not just up.

Not only is that one of the coolest scientific instruments ever, but that's the first I'd heard that they'd solved the "missing neutrinos" problem.
