Can't take the sugar, and nowhere near the fiber of a hand-full of wheat bran.

I've grown to rely on olive oil as a staple in cooking. Even use it plus balsamic vinegar (and garlic and basil) as a bread dip, Italian-style, instead of margarine. I'm not sure I really slice off that many mgs of cholesterol, but it's a cool way to eat bread anyway.

I think I see your point about the "liquid lid", but that kind of intervention halfway through is awkward with the automatic rice cooker, so I think I'll stick with the drops at the beginning.

Glad to hear your health is good. I seem to be in a similar situation. The cardiology department closed their books on me after a few years, and the other thing that came to light, circulatory problems in my legs, is improving with diet and exercise (lots of walking).

I guess we've lived the old adage that that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

That's how I've always looked at my kitchen. Recalling my Infantry days, there were times I even came up with unique recipes from my C-rations.

Strawberries -- if you don't mind the flavor. A bit overpowering for me, but I add them to my oatmeal anyway. Loaded with fiber.

Interesting. They'd have to be plain dark chocolate for me, though.

I like it with a little sugar in it and I add fresh blueberries or dried cherries once in a while. I like the creamy texture so I don't add any nuts and leave them for my salads or finger food.

I tried the microwave cooking version and don't like it, so it's the stove for me, but not as intricate.

Only she starts cold. No oil, either, but she does add a variety of grains and spices, don't ask me what. Lots of fruit. They have to be steel cut oats, too.

She always makes enough for me even though I'm not a breakfast person. I've asked her to cut back on the ginger or use the garlic press; don't like chunks o' ginger in mine, thanks. Do like a half dozen chocolate chips or M&M's thrown in, though, provides some entertainment. Otherwise no butter, or brown sugar, or milk. Couple cashews ain't bad, either.

I need to limit carbohydrates and especially sugar. And I need to get lots of fiber. So here's my recipe:

An inch or so of Kellog's 40% bran in a plastic cup.
1/2 packet of unsweetened, unflavored instant oatmeal.
One handful of crushed walnuts or pecans, or slivered almonds.
The right amount of boiling water.

1% fat milk on top. Kind of Spartan but that's it.
